Natera Lawsuits
In 2021, a substantial portion of Natera’s preimplantation genetic tests (PGTs) were contaminated due to defective testing solutions from Thermo Fisher, a leading manufacturer of genetic testing products.
Despite the rising failure rates, Natera continued to use the defective solutions, resulting in a dangerous increase in no-call rates and the destruction of thousands of embryos. Thermo Fisher was also aware of these defective solutions but continued to distribute them.
Natera also faces an earlier class action for misleading and falsely advertising its NIPT tests, which screen for an array of chromosomal and genetic conditions affecting a baby’s health. Natera markets its NIPT tests as the most reliable non-invasive method of screening for genetic conditions. However, an investigation by the New York Times revealed that positive test results for some rare genetic conditions are incorrect 85 percent of the time or more—up to 98 percent. Natera continued to promote its NIPT test as a reliable detector of rare abnormalities, knowing for years that it is susceptible to false positives.
